What is Kambô?

Kambô is a traditional Amazonian ritual that involves the secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor frog.

Traditionally, Kambô is used to clear ‘panema’ (negative energies), to increase strength, stamina, and fertility, to remove parasites & venoms, and to boost immunity. It is used by tribespeople before hunting to heighten the senses and to remove the human smell from the body. It is used to treat malaria and snake bites, drawing venoms and toxins out of the body.

Outside of the jungle, many individuals have chosen to receive kambô to support their path of healing. The intentions that people have in receiving kambô vary widely. Many come to kambô to clear emotions, toxins, chemicals, heavy metals, or to simply re-align with themselves, their personal power, their inner & outer strength.

Often, you will see a long list of ailments that kambô can help with, everything from anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain and illness, hormonal issues, autoimmune issues, cancer, trauma, PTSD…the list goes on. There are many anecdotal stories and personal accounts of how kambô has helped individuals with these conditions.

Kambô helps to purify, to cleanse, to release that which no longer serves. It works on a physical level, purging and clearing things from the body. But, it also works on the emotional, mental, and spiritual. In reality, we can’t separate these layers of ourself, and kambô does not just work on one of those levels - Kambô will meet you exactly where are and work with your whole being, going through your system and purifying where you need it most in the body, mind, and spirit. Once we apply the kambô, it’s up to the frog and you, your spirit and its spirit, to do the work.

My job as your facilitator is to create and hold the ceremonial space, to keep you safe, and to guide you through the process as with as much ease through the discomfort as is possible. I hold the responsibility of carrying kambô with honor, with strength, with love, and with a high standard of ethical and safe practices.

The powerful effects of kambô last long after the ceremony is over. You and I, we’ll work together for about three hours, but after our time together is done, you’ll continue on your way, and you will begin to learn and integrate the session into your life. Kambô helps in the purging, the clearing, and also tends to give the courage, the will, and the presence to whatever it is that you need, to continue to progress forward.

It is often many weeks or months after a session, that my clients reach out to me to say how grateful they are for kambô, for the session that they have had, and to report the amazing transformations that have happened in their lives that can be attributed to the work that was done within their session.

Always have a clear Intention

I want to make it clear that kambô will not do the work for you, but in doing the work with kambô, you may be very likely to heal the things that have been preventing you from taking that next step forward in life, and by doing this kind of work, you can get closer to that vision that you have in mind, of how you want your life to be.

Kambô can help.

It always has a way.

The best way to work with kambô, is to come in with strong intentions. What is it about kambô that causes you to feel called, and what do you want to be different? What it is that you hope to release, and what is it that you’d like to bring in?

How & What does it look like?

In the days leading up to your ceremony, you will treat yourself well. You will stay connected to your intention, you will nourish yourself well. In the way that I work with kambô, there is not a strict dieta that needs to be followed. Please do not limit your salt intake. No juice cleansing, no water fasting, no coffee enemas. You want to come to kambô as strong as you can be, not when you are depleted or restricting yourself.

Prior to your session, there will be a 8-12 hour period of fasting. No food. You may have small amounts of water, and herbal tea up to 2 hrs prior to your session. When you arrive, we will talk, open up your intentions, connect with your feelings, and move into the ceremony. Prior to application, you will drink up to 2 liters of water.

Several gates are opened in the skin by using a lit piece of incense or vine. This is a small blister and the top layer of skin is removed. In our first session together, we are typically working with 3-5 gates are opened on the upper arm or lower leg. Kambô is activated with water and formed into small points. These points are applied to the open gates, and within a few minutes Kambô begins circulating through the lymphatic system and continues to move through the body where it is needed. You will experience a sense of heat as the Kambô moves through you. Your blood pressure will elevate and your heart will beat strong. Your blood pressure will also drop. Kambô will cause a visceral response and physical purging that can include vomiting, sweating, crying, shaking, the releasing of emotions, and diarrhea.

The kambô is typically on the body for 20-45 minutes. Once you move through and your process is completed, the kambô is removed, and your integration begins. You will rest and have space and time to ingregrate. It is in these moments that some times are the deepest, most serene, and most peaceful. During this time many people feel that a weight has been lifted, they have profound thoughts and experiences.

How many sessions ?

The number of sessions for an individual can vary based on a number of factors. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer to this. Many people begin with one session, integrate the experience, and then come back when they feel called. Other times, people are traveling to sit with kambô and want to experience three sessions over a weekend or short period of time. You may have heard of the common approach to have three sessions within three days, three weeks, or within a moon cycle. It has been thought that this gives the body a significant boost in its strength and immunity.

In my experience, three sessions in a short period of time allows someone to deeply connect with the energies and with the peptides of kambô, providing a thorough experience that leads to continual integration well after the session.

Most people who receive kambô once, will receive it again after some time.

A generally healthy individual might receive kambô once/month or 12 times over the course of a year if they feel called.

A person who may be called to kambô to help address some deeper issues may have many sessions spanning a shorter period of time.

Can everyone receive Kambô?

Most people are able to receive Kambô, however there are some contraindications, and there are certain circumstances where the way that we work with kambô is modified and adapted to meet an individual’s circumstance.

Traditional Kambô Purge vs. Gentle Meditative Kambô:

I have the ability to serve those who are not ready or interested in a full purgative session, who want to sit intentionally, receive the peptides, and meditate with kambô. It is very beautiful and a sweet way to build your relationship in working with kambô.

Sometimes I start gently this way with clients and build to more intense sessions. These gentle sessions are no less powerful, in my opinion, and can be a beautiful way to work on emotional layers, to get out of the head and into the body, and to gently be held in the space with kambô.

What’s best for an individual depends on their intentions, goals, and many other factors. We will discuss what’s best for you throughout our consultation and prior to our ceremony.

My kambô story

I am not only a witness, I am a living example of how this sacred secretion is a transformer. I first came to kambô to focus on my physical strength, after several years of natural cleansing, fasting, and focusing on my physical and emotional well-being. The one thing I struggled to do was to release and purge emotions. As much as I could find places to cry and release through walking, movement, and yoga, my nervous system was out of balance, and the grief, anger, and sadness surfaced in my skin. It showed up as eczema, in rashes, and in pockets of heat. My circulation was also becoming compromised, where there were areas of trapped coldness in my body, and I couldn’t keep parts of my body warm. I likely had Reynaud’s phenomenon or another autoimmune condition, and medical doctors could only offer help in treating my symptoms, which didn’t suit my needs. The underlying issues couldn’t be resolved on my own, they just kept moving around within my body. Kambô helped me to move and release those stuck energies, to improve my circulation, reset my nervous system, and release the emotions that had been stuck in my tissues throughout my life. It has brought me renewed strength, balance, and has helped harmonize pathways within.

It also has helped me to heal childhood wounds. It has helped me to process, resolve, and release the generational trauma that has been passed to me. There were a lot of things that my ancestors could not freely express, that remained suppressed and trapped in their cells, that passed on to me, and I have had a beautiful opportunity in my life, to continue to work on these things as they heal with me and through me.

Kambô is my ally, and I am happy to be in service with this beautiful frog.
